Quote of the Week
Charity (sadaqah) is due upon every joint of a person on every day that the sun rises. Administering justice between two people is an act of charity; and to help a man concerning his riding beast by helping him on to it or lifting his luggage on to it is an act of charity; a good word is charity; and every step which you take to prayer is charity; and removing that which is harmful from the road is charity." Reported by al-Bukharee (Eng. Trans. 4/146/no.232)

HAITI EARTHQUAKE

HAITI EARTHQUAKE
FUNDS URGENTLY NEEDED
GAZA Recent earthquakes in Haiti have been described as being equivalent to the effects of several nuclear bombs. The area continues to be affected by several aftershocks. This has caused:

  • Almost 3 million people displaced
  • Estimated Death toll over 200,000
  • Over 80,000 burials in mass graves
  • Vulnerable children orphaned, abandoned or stranded
  • Elderly and infirm left helpless and alone
  • Insufficient number of doctors and inadequate medical supplies
  • Unnecessary amputation of limbs causing further problems
  • People forced to live in over-crowded outdoor camps
  • Lack of food and clean drinking water with the risk of diseases, epidemics and infections

This disaster has not only resulted in a humanitarian catastrophe but has also decimated the social, political and economical infrastructure of an already poverty stricken country.

International rescue teams continue to pull survivors from under collapsed buildings adding to the already overwhelming number of people needing assistance.

AL-KHAIR'S IMMEDIATE RESPONSE GAZA
Al-Khair is in the frontline tirelessly working towards helping the survivors and easing their suffering. Al-Khair is the first Muslim charity to have sent a team currently working on the ground in Haiti. Conditions are difficult and in some cases dangerous, but with your support they are making a difference. These include:

  • In excess of £200,000 raised through charity appeals on IQRA TV (Sky 826)
  • On target to have raised Half a Million pounds
  • Relief team currently working in Haiti
  • Provision of temporary shelter kits to ease immediate suffering
  • Provision of medical supplies
  • Water purification systems providing thousands of litres of life saving water
  • Assisting in setup of mobile hospital clinics
  • Burial arrangement services for the deceased

Despite your generosity we will only be able to scratch the surface of the problem due to the sheer scale of the disaster where millions have been affected.

AL-KHAIR'S LONG-TERM RESPONSE - REHABILITATE GAZA
At present your generous funds and the Al-Khair team on the ground can only help to alleviate the immediate suffering.
Through Al-Khair's experiences of working in past earthquake disaster zones, it will take many years to rebuild the destroyed infrastructure.
During this period temporary accommodation will be required. To help rehabilitate people, Al-Khair intends to launch a Tent Village project which will go some way to provide sustainable and effective shelter enabling families and displaced individuals to be housed.

UPDATES
_____________________________________________________________

Assalaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,
Dear team members of IQRA TV, Al-Khair Foundation, all respected donors, well wishers and supporters of the Haiti A Call to Humanity Appeal by Al-Khair Foundation, may the peace and blessings of God almighty be with you all.

Today is the first day we have personally witnessed the fruits of our efforts, masha Allah.

A camp has been set up for those who are in need of medical attention especially catering for those women who are expecting a baby.

So far 9 expectant mothers that have been accommodated in Al-Khair Foundation's Emergency Shelter Boxes have successfully had babies delivered and masha Allah without much difficulty.

Today Imam Qasim and the Al-Khair team visited the camp and held the babies in their own arms. Some of the babies are in need of basic medical attention but others require more detailed attention.

The Al-Khair team also managed to accompany a truck loaded with food, water and nutritional supplies. Imam Qasim distributed these supplies himself along with the extraordinary and amazing support and assistance from the Dutch army and UN peace keeping force.

Please view images of the relief effort on IQRA TV (Sky Channel 826) and also on the Al-Khair website.

Wassalaam
Al-Khair Relief Team in Haiti

_____________________________________________________________

Assalaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,
Alkhair aid workers and programme coordinators travelled from the UK at different stages. As the airports in Haiti are not operational, our team have had to fly to the Dominican Republic.

Imam Qasim and Mr Aslam from the West MIdlands flew from London to Punta Cana which is approximately 350 kilometres from the Haitian border. The flight landed at night and Imam Qasim was greeted by two of his team members.

Imam Qasim refused to spend the night in the city of Punta Cana insisting on driving to Haiti through the night and entered Haiti at the Jimani border.

According to Imam Qasim, this is the worst disaster any western country has witnessed. The earthquake affected a small section of the country but caused the highest number of casualties.

One of the aid workers who also travelled to the earthquake zone in Kashmir in 2005 said that the Haiti earthquake, certainly in terms of death toll and casualties, is more devastating than the Kashmir disaster. The Kashmir quake affected a much larger area and took place in the early hours of the day while most of the people were indoors. The Haiti earthquake took place at around 5pm, while most of the population were outdoors yet still the death toll is much higher in Haiti reaching quarter of million.

Jazakumullah khair
Wassalaam
