Quote of the Week
Charity (sadaqah) is due upon every joint of a person on every day that the sun rises. Administering justice between two people is an act of charity; and to help a man concerning his riding beast by helping him on to it or lifting his luggage on to it is an act of charity; a good word is charity; and every step which you take to prayer is charity; and removing that which is harmful from the road is charity." Reported by al-Bukharee (Eng. Trans. 4/146/no.232)

Al-Khair Disaster Appeal for Indonesian Earthquake Victims

Al-Khair has launched a major appeal to help those left destitute by the devastating earthquakes in Indonesia. The first quake measuring 7.6 magnitude struck on Wednesday 30th September with the second quake striking the following day measuring 6.8 magnitude with several other aftershocks having been reported.

The earthquake has destroyed entire villages in remote areas of Indonesia. Major damage to road networks is making the task of reaching these villages a perilous one. Indonesia's major cities have also been badly affected. The city of Padang which has a population of 900,000 people took the full impact of the quake. With communication systems damaged, reaching out to the survivors is posing further problems.

Some 20,000 buildings have been damaged or completely destroyed with estimates that 1,200 lives have been lost with a further 3,000 people as yet unaccounted for.

Difficult Human Conditions

Many people are sleeping out in the open in often cold and wet conditions due to fears of further after shocks causing them also to become trapped in collapsed buildings.

There are increasing concerns of widespread diseases and epidemics with reports of the stench of decomposing bodies in Padang city. As time passes there is little prospect of finding survivors making this problem more acute.

State run hospitals are overwhelmed with the sheer number of casualties many of whom are being treated in ill equipped outside tents. Many of these hospital buildings are also themselves damaged.

The humanitarian situation is further deteriorating with lack of food and clean water leading to starvation and malnutrition. Most affected are children and the elderly.

The shock of the disaster and the ongoing suffering of the people is causing psychological trauma. Again, the most vulnerable are children and the elderly many of whom have lost their entire families left to survive on their own.
